About the Qualification

The purpose of the New Venture Creation qualification is to provide the basis for potential and existing entrepreneurs to capitalise on the opportunities required to start and grow sustainable businesses.  These are sustainable businesses then become part of the mainstream economy, enabling the learners to tender for business opportunities within both the public and private sectors.  This qualification is designed for learners who intend to set up or have already set up own ventures. The context of the learner's own new venture forms the thrusts for assessing the competencies and knowledge gained from this qualification.

Although this qualification provides an exit point from the learning and as such students do not have to achieve an entire qualification before earning a living, learners can come back and continue their learning process at any time.  In addition, certain outcomes achieved to qualify are transferable to other fields, for example, project management, team work, seeing from another person's point of view, and improves career options for qualified learners. To qualify, learners learn to learn by evaluating progress and outputs, and improving on their own work.

Target Audience

The National Certificate in New Venture Creation (SMME) (SAQA 49648) is aimed at developing entrepreneurs as managers and leaders who fully appreciate the relevance of the Fifth Industrial Revolution (5IR) and the importance of socio-economic matters in the transformation of the workplace that represents current realities, and who wants become empowered to appropriately respond to this need.  Students will focus on the key elements of entrepreneurship, such as business management, identifying markets, customer service, organisational behaviour, the use of technology and embracing innovative thought.

This qualification is ideal for those who are interested in

  • Capitalising on opportunities to start and grow sustainable businesses that form part of the mainstream economy 
  • The development of the appropriate skills and knowledge for the establishment and development of an own enterprise

Minimum Admission Requirements

  • English Proficiency
  • Communication at NQF Level 1
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or ABET Level 3

Additional Requirements

  • Prospective learners are expected to write a short motivational application letter expressing the desire to enrol for this qualification
  • Provision of relevant documentation such as the level of academic studies and other courses completed, which will be used to moderate eligibility
  • Additional institutional support such as access to the internet and a computer may be identified and considered on a case-by-case basis
  • National Senior Certificate would be beneficial but is not a requirement
International students with Senior School Certificate can apply.
This Qualification can be achieved wholly, or in part, through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Programme Duration

The programme is typically completed in one year not exceeding a maximum of eighteen months. This qualification is delivered both through blended learning and distance learning, which utilises a wide range of teaching and learning methodologies including digital support. It is delivered with innovative teaching methods.

Tuition Fees

The total cost of the qualification is R 35,550.00.


The institution charges an Application Fee of R 500.00, in addition an Admission Fee will be payable upon enrolment.  The milestones in the registration procedure are as follows:

    About the New Venture Creation (SMME) Field of Study
    The future of global economies does not just lie in the formal sector, but within the informal Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises (SMME) sector too.  This is a growing part of any economy and it requires substantial focus from a developmental perspective.  It is common knowledge that there is a great demand to equip entrepreneurial learners with knowledge and skills so that they can become part of the mainstream economy as they set up and manage new ventures.  Whilst the complexity of learning will be simpler at this qualification’s particular level, the main outputs, requirements and competencies of such entrepreneurs are broadly the same.

    The small business sector is growing and it is in light of this that various stakeholders have taken the initiative to provide mentorship programmes that will assist budding entrepreneurs to become a more integral part of the mainstream economy, serving both the public and private sectors.  Apart from the formative development that can take place via these programmes, it also provides more important for sustainable development.

    In addition, New Venture Creation (NVC) is aimed at developing entrepreneurship for the 21st Century.  Acquire strong, comprehensive theoretical coverage balanced with practical examples and case studies, all designed to instruct students on how to formulate, plan for, finance, launch, manage, and eventually harvest a new venture. The programme is demanding, practical, and experiential. The real-world approach gets students thinking, planning, and ready to accomplish their own businesses. The text is practitioner-focused which will equip entrepreneurs to recognise entrepreneurial opportunities and covers the process of getting a new venture started, growing the venture, and successfully harvesting it.  The learning modules are clustered as follows:
